Interpreting
 
Simultaneous interpreting must, in all cases, be performed by a team of 2 interpreters per language combination, and where the duration of the assignment is longer than 4 hours per day or the subject area or working conditions are particularly demanding, the client and the interpreters may agree on a team of 4 per language combination.
Consecutive interpreting may be performed by 1 interpreter per language combination, provided that the duration of the assignment does not exceed 3 hours per day. Where the duration of the assignment is longer or the assignment is in lecture format, a team of 2 per language combination must be arranged.
The following compensation rules and rates shall apply to both simultaneous and consecutive interpreting:
  1. Compensation amounts should be based on daily rates, while any hours after the eighth hour per day should be charged for as overtime (see Item 3 below).
  2. Overtime, i.e., work hours after the eighth hour of work on any day or work done on weekends or holidays shall be charged for at the daily rate, plus 50 per cent.
  3. Where the programme for the event, as originally drafted or modified in the course of the event, calls for splitting the participants into groups and, accordingly, splitting the team of interpreters, the time of such group work must be charged for separately for each of the interpreters in accordance with these Terms and Conditions over and above the daily amount agreed upon for the team.
  4. If a day’s work is partially cancelled or the actual duration of such work is shorter than expected, the client must pay the full amount of daily compensation agreed upon as initially programmed or the minimum of 4 hours. Where a day’s work is cancelled on the day before the event, the client must pay 50 per cent of the amount originally agreed upon (per day of the original programme). Where a day’s work is cancelled on the day of the event, the client must pay the full amount originally agreed upon. In the event of cancellation of a day’s work with a notice of 2 to 5 days, the client must pay 50 per cent of the compensation amount agreed upon.
  5. Where an interpreter is called upon for work outside the city of his professional domicile, a full daily rate must be charged. Travel time to and from the place of work may not be charged for at less than 50 per cent of the daily. All travelling expenses, including fares, accommodation and an appropriate per diem allowance, must be covered by the client.
  6. No sound recording whatsoever is allowed of simultaneous or consecutive interpreting. However, the client and the interpreters may reasonably agree to have such recording made, provided that its duration is charged for separately at 50 per cent of the daily rate.
  7. Where more than one team of interpreters are hired for the same event, the same daily or hourly rates must apply to all.

 

Translation

Translation work is paid for per standard page of the material in the target language, such page being equal to 1,800 characters, including spaces.
Surcharges of not less than 20 per cent must be paid for return translation (i.e., into a non-native language), complexity (e.g., specialist terminology), a rush job (more than 6 standard pages per day), confidentiality, legalisation, a job on the client’s premises, etc.
Revision of translation work done by another translator may not be paid for at less than 30 per cent of the corresponding translation rate, and any re-work, partial or total, depending on the quality of the initial translation and the degree of modification by the reviser, must be paid for at higher rate up to the corresponding full translation rate.
In the event of cancellation by the client before the agreed delivery date, the part of the material already translated must be paid for in full.


These Standard Terms and Conditions apply to contractual relations between a client and any individual interpreter or translator. Where agencies are involved in such relations as intermediaries, the latter may make other arrangements with the client, provided that such
